Regiments stationed in Kent in 1841
« on: Sunday 08 March 09 09:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone happen to know which regiments would have been based at Fort Pitt Barracks, Chatham in Kent during the 1841 census?

Hi Gemma

An easier way would be to go back to the 1841 census and press PREVIOUS until you find a few officers - the more the better. These can then be researched either in the Army Lists or the London Gazette to discover the regiment/corps.

Officers are Ensign, Cornet, Lt, Captain, Major or above.

Chatham was used by the Royal Marines and artillery as well as the infantry.

You can also look at the parish registers for Chatham to see if there are any clues there.  They are online at http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/ and I would suggest looking at Gillingham too.

Hello,
I am trying to find the birth or baptism record of a Catherine GREEN born c 1840 Chatham, Kent with father Daniel GREEN b.?-d.1858 (soldier -died India) and mother maybe Elizabeth. On the 1851 Census for there is an Elizabeth GREEN aged 40 Unmarried b. Milton, Kent [near Gravesend] and above is a Catherine GREEN aged 7 (should be 10/11 though) b. Chatham, Kent and above her an Elizabeth FARMER Widow aged 70. They are Paupers/Inmates at Gravesend & Milton Union, Trafalgar Rd Gravesend.

Catherine GREEN aged 20 married Michael SHEA in 1859 and she was born Chatham, Kent -father named as Daniel GREEN deceased. Private 94th Regt. These are my grandmother's paternal grandparents. I don't have an 1841 Census for Catherine's family - Catherine would have been a baby but at least I might have both parents names to confirm or otherwise her mother's name. I am wondering if she may have been born at the Barracks?? FARMER is a surname associated with later generations of this family from Michael and Catherine SHEA nee GREEN's descendants. Thank you if you can even give me the link to the correct 1841 Census to look for little Catherine GREEN that would be great.

UPDATE: I have found the Census for Chatham Barracks now but if anyone can find Catherine GREEN's birth and/or baptism elsewhere in the area - in the meantime I will be browsing the Barracks records - maybe tomorrow as it is very late here now. Link to 1841 Census:

Also, Catherine's marriage to Michael SHEA:

Just adding - Elizabeth Farmer was a shopkeeper born Tichfield, Hampshire.

I note that you have 1858 as a death date for Daniel, do you have the death certificate.
