Tuppen, Winborn in Eastbourne

I am new to this site so can anyone help, I have tried everything else I can think of.

I am looking for anything on my grandfather James Alfred Tuppen. I can find no trace of him or his father in any part of the BMD or any of the census records although he is in the new 1911 one.

All I have is the marriage certificate to my grandmother Mary Winborn (Winborne). They were married in 1906 Eastbourne and my grandfather, then 36, was living in Tideswell Rd, Eastbourne and was a fishmonger, his father is down as Alfred Tuppen, a gardener.

At some time between the the two world wars my grandmother (with or without my grandfather) set up a cafe, called Tuppens, in North St, Eastbourne which was then later moved to Susans Rd next to the back entrance of the Bus Garage.  At some point, probably after ww2 my Uncle,Kenward,  and his wife took it over until they retired in mid 70s. Be interested also if anyone remembers it.

Is there any chance he was born outside of Sussex?

does he specify a PoB other than Eastbourne on the 1911 census ?

was he a Bachelor or Widower on marriage ?

Does he use those exact forenames on kids Birth Certs ?

1911 Census, haven't looked at full transcript yet but  it is possible he was from outside Sussex but I have checked BMD for the whole country,  Bachelor at marriage and only James on Certs.

sounds like the 1911 is your best bet at the moment .... I was wondering if forenames had been reversed - seen this a few times.

The other possibility is that the Fathers name is fabricated, or that of a relative - if he was illegitimate. He may also have been under a stepfathers name in earlier census.

Tricky one it would seem.

Have you searched the London Gazette?  You might find something there about the cafe.

Just managed to get the transcript from 1911 census and he was born Brighton and the family were living in North St at the time which was then a confectionery, the cafe must have come later or when they moved to Susans Rd.
other census and bmd still no result.

so he was 36 when he married in 1906 - how old was he in 1911 ... consistant ?


Oh, meant to ask before - who were the Marriage witnesses ?
