You are lucky in that your grandfather's birth appears to have been registered with the British consular authorities in Shanghai:

Edgar Bruce Green and his daughter Joyce are mentioned in a post on the China Daily website from 2005:

In May 1945 Edgar Bruce GREEN, married, aged 55 yrs 0 months, harbor master, resident of Tientsin, China, was admitted to the United States for 30 days en route to Vancouver, Canada.  He had arrived in California on the SS Admiral E.W. Eberle, which sailed from Manila on 10 April 1945.

His birthplace was given as Hampton Wick, England.  He was 5ft 9.5 inches tall with medium complexion, brown hair and grey eyes.  There were no family members travelling with him.  He had previously passed through the United States in transit in October 1941.  He was due to meet a friend named Leon Richard Schenage or Schinage, of 530 E. 90th St, New York, N.Y.
