Simmons Family In Ballinasloe
« on: Saturday 14 March 09 17:34 GMT (UK) »
My great grandparents Thomas Simmons & Ellen (Eleanora) Mahon or McMahon Simmons lived in Ballinasloe from at least the mid 1880's until the early 1900's. They owned the pub in Market Square (currently knows as An Taum) until my grandmother Josephine Simmons sold it to the Jenkins family and left Ireland for the U.S. in 1913.  My gr grandmother Ellen Simmons, died in Ballinasloe on July 6 1910, however I've been unable to find any official record of her death.  I tried the GRS and they have no record of  it.  If anyone has any idea how to locate this info or has any information on the Simmons and/or Mahon families from Ballinasloe please contact me.

Thanks
Mike Sparks

from Slaters Commercial Directory of 1894 :

Thomas Simmons, spirit dlr. Market sq, Ballinasloe

no sign of Simmons in Ballinasloe in earlier editions - e.g. 1881

Hi Nipy,

Thanks for the information.  That is my family, Josephine was my grand mother.  I know that her mother died in 1910 but for some reason there is no "official" record of her death.  I don't know if you know of this website but the 1901 census for much of Galway, Leitrim and Roscommon has been transcribed by Roger McDonnell and it is available at no charge at -

http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtml

Thanks again, Mike Sparks

That's a wonderful site. How grateful we should be to these people who do it for free.
Are there any other freebies around - other counties maybe?

I only know of that one for Ireland.  Do all my other research through FHC films and ancestry.
