Everything comes from privately submitted IGI entries. So far I have not been able to find any extracted records.

The shipping record says Mary was 42 in 1839:

Neptune  WHATMAN Thomas  46  27/09/1839  Reels 2654, 1304  340  [4/4780], [4/4846]  Wife 42; farm labourer  NRS 5313, 5314

and her death record says she was 51 when she died in 1849 in NSW, Aust. - no parents listed. Thomas died in 1861:

Death Reg# 2606/1861  WHITEMAN  THOMAS   JOHN   UNKNOWN   CAMDEN

I've looked in FreeReg without any luck.

I hope there is some way of confirming some of the dates and places.

The marriage in Udimore in 1814 is on the Sussex Marriage Index.   Both of the parish and by Banns but no further details are given.

Hello Andrea,

With this marriage James Butcher of Brede to Mary Mallen at Westfield 15 Jan 1798 it rules out daughter Mary being born in 1788 but the baptism date I have of 3 Jul may not be correct. It looks like Mary was baptised in 1898 but where and when?

Not sure what to suggest for baptisms other than searching every local parish.  I am not sure where you live as it is not in your profile but if a visit to the record office is out of the question then you can order the film of the registers to search at your nearest LDS family history centre.  They are worldwide.
Sussex Family History Group may be able to help you also.

Hello Andrea,

I'm an Australian but currently in SE Asia and won't be back home in Sydney for another 10 months. I'm stuck with what I can get via the internet and limited by what pay sites and/or certificated I can afford. I've been working on my tree for less than two years so with about 4300 individuals I still have plently of work to do on it. The gaps that remain are much harder to fill though.

I am just heading off for Australia via Malaysia as my son is marrying in NSW at Easter.   Long way to go from Sussex!
Worth look at the National Archives site to see what the record office hold.  Sometimes poor law or other manorial records show up.
