« on: Thursday 19 March 09 03:30 GMT (UK) »
hiya

im unable to make out the name of the premises on this 1861 census  (ive underlined the areas of confusion) my ancestor is listed as living with a lasy 86 years old when she is just 7. No sign of her parents.

Many Thanks

Hi

On further checking I think the second name is Almshouse (with an "s")

The underlined words look like Turnpike Road and Almshouse.

The second, Almshouse looks a funny entry as the people there are few and not the usual crowd in an Almshouse, but that a side comment.

Katy, Almshouses were a heap better than the workhouse which was a dreaded place.   You will have seen that in your googling.
In Halifax one of my lot was admitted to the Crossley Almshouses and ha d 4 rooms, and 10/- week allownace- he'd never been better off.   Some dignity with it.   Almshous also featured in the TV series, Barchester twoers where all the old men were cared for..

Amazing stuff we all learn as we investigate things..
