Hunslet Workhouse cemetery
« on: Thursday 19 March 09 13:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for some advice.  I have a death cert for a Dennis Smith who died 25th June 1879 in the Union Workhouse, Hunslet, but I could do with some more proof that he is 'mine', so would like to check for any additional info in the burial registers.

Where is he likely to be buried?  Did the workhouse have it's own burial ground?

Any help appreciated.  :)  Also could do with being pointed in the right direction for access to the relevant burial register as I'm not local.

Jo.

Hi Dee,

Thanks for that.  That's the same Dennis as I have the death cert for (same age), so now I know where to look for his burial.  :)

I'll follow up the link.

Hi Sasha.
If it's of any interest to you, there's an excellent site where you'll find the history of the Hunslet workhouse:

www.workhouses.org.uk/

Go to left hand column and click on 'Workhouse Locations', then 'English Poor Law Unions, then, 'Yorkhire W.Riding' then, 'Hunslet'.

That should fill half an hour or so - but it's very interesting!
