Missing marriage certificate from Forfar
« on: Thursday 17 February 05 00:54 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find marriage certificate for James Piggot / Betsy Napier, married in Forfar in 1838. Not on 'official'
government site, but picked up on IGI - but no information on parents. Probably a CoS wedding but cannot be sure.
Can anyone help?

Many thanks
Doug

Hi Doug,
You are not going to get a marriage certificate for this marriage.
Civil rego. didn't start till 1855.
The only way to see the Church entry is to go to the nearest Mormon centre, and order the Parish film.
That is the only way you can see anything written about them.
You most probably won't get the parents anyway. The next thing you should do is find the Deaths of each [if in scotland].
and that will have the parents on it.
Or put more info on this wonderful site, and someone will help you.

HI Doug,

Think your problem with Scotlandspeople might be connected to the spelling of the names.  If you check the IGI, you will find a marriage for JAS PIGOT AND BETTY NAPIER.

Sp search engine will not pick up variations in spellings of names, it has to be exact, i.e. to match what is on their Index.   Best thing to do is use all variations of names or wildcards.

Anyway,  I checked the OPR for the marriage, which reads as follows:

OPR - Forfar (288) 27th May 1838

Pigot     Jas. Pigot, Manuf. in this Burgh and Betty Napier in the Parish
of Dundee were proclaimed in order to marriage and were
             afterwards married.

I'm afraid OPRs don't usually give very much information, but this little bit might help.   If they died in Scotland from 1855, you should be able to get death certificates which willl give parents names.

Regards,
Dorothy

Thanks to the two of you for getting back to me on this one. I never realised just how many permutations in the spelling of 'Piggott' had been used through the years by the family.
Got the wedding lines, and DCs and parents, even although the parents were not the ones I was expecting. But still
going back to Kingoldrum!
Again many thanks
Doug
