I think the 1837 date is a red herring of some kind.

There are five Carrighan births registered in St Pancras district plus the death of father Ter(r)entius. Sue, if you are correct about British law then these children should not have been registered using the Carrighan name.  There are also the extracted baptism entries which use the Carrighan ( various spellings) name.  If you have a look at references for Terrentius (father) on Google he is a highly respected solicitor - not that that necessarily means he keeps to the letter of the law any more than anyone else!

Lynne, would you care to share the parentage of Charlotte Jane - was her surname Power?  This is one of those posts that is really intriguing!

Cheers, Judith

Hi All,
Well, we have not found a marriage fo Terentius and  Charlotte yet.  Perhaps it is hiding under one of her discrepent spellings

OOooh! I wish we could have a chance at deciphering it.

Can you scan section of the date in question and post it?

The R. chat rules also allow you to post other small bits of a cert if they help to ascertian script shapings.  So, if there was something else with 5's or 7's or 3's or 1's you are allowed to put those up.

I agree with you Judith, it is most  intriguing.

Adding also that my understanding of the law in Britain at the time also says that the name of the child cannot be altered,on the registration even if a marriage subsequently takes place.

Hi Lynne,

I agree this kind of thing can be very tricky to the inexperienced and it is certainly not my best field either.

However, if you have a scanner or if there is someone who will scan the paper for you and help you file it in your computer so you can access it, there are some here whom I think will gladly resize, and post the relevant bits for you.

All you would have to do is send the picture to them.

{I am sorry that this group of  hypothetical  helpful people does not include me ;D ;D}

I'd be there for ever ;)

Hi All,
Yes, Robyn.
A marriage in India ispossible.

A bit of a google of the Terentius Carrighan name turns up some interesting items including a list of his published works in Law and Music  between 1826 and 1850.

There is another tree with his name on it too which gives CHARLOTTE's former name as Power.

There is a marriage asserted in Victoria by this researcher between George Carrighan and someone in 1858. His mother is said to be Charlotte and father Terentius.
It says he was born in 1834.

Depending how willing you are to accept the unsubstantiated work of others, it is probable that TERENTIUS and CHARLOTTE married prior to compulsory Registration.
