I too noticed an entry  in free BMD for a John Greystock Carrighan.

It is not a common name.

Charlotte Jane's birth in Madras may well mean that she is a soldier's child and unless her maiden name can be determined it might be hard to find out more about her. The marriage certificate in 1856 may have her parents names and place and year of birth. So this is a worthwhile certificate to purchase.

Carrighan seems to have been transcribed as Carrigham in Free BMD as well. An easy slip when you look at old handwritten records.

I have been unable to find a death for her in NSW or Victoria. I will get round to looking at QLD, TAs and WA in the next few days. It is always possible that she moved on to NZ, South Africa or even returned to the UK.

On IGI is the birth 1847, London, of Terentius Julius CARRIGHAN, parents Terentius CARRIGHAN, Charlotte Jane POWER.  This is a submitted record though, which are not always reliable.
Also
George CARIGHAN, parents as above but no surname given for Charlotte - b 29May 1834, baptised 26June 1834,  Old Church St Pancras.  Extracted entry.
Julia CARRIGHAN, parents as above but no surname given for Charlotte - b 6 May 1844, baptised 7 June 1844,  Old Church St Pancras.  Extracted entry.
Julia Augusta CARRIGHAN, parents as above but no surname given for Charlotte - b 24 Mar 1850, baptised 10 May 1850,  Old Church St Pancras.  Extracted entry.

There is also the birth 1852 and baptism 1856 of John Greystock CARRIGHAN's daughter at the same church.

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

A Google search shows a number of references to Terentius the solicitor as well as two Rootsweb refs with information about the whole family.

Cheers, Judith

Hi New Zealand,

Are you able please to give us what details there are on the RICHARD BANKS's death certificate which you have.

The year, place occupation do all contribute to helping with your puzzle.  ;D

If they were in Tarnagulla, 20 kms north of Dunolly on the goldfields, he died in 1860 and was the Telegraph Master there.

He left a Will and although it is not digitised, the documents related to probate of his Will are available for reading.

JANE BANKS is stated to be his wife [and trustee] and three children are mentioned.

Same family?? ??? ???

Hi Lynne
Did you get the Richard Banks/Charlotte Carrighan marriage certificate?  This should give you more information about Richard Banks' parents.

Download immediately as Kris put on her posts.

Cheers, Judith

Yes I do have the marriage cert now, Richard Banks was a widower in 1850, then again 1856, two living children one dead.and on Charlotte widow 1837 and six living children and four dead. She was born in India.
Parents are on there as well.

Hi,

Interesting,

So it seems there was not a marriage to Terentius CARRIGHAN,

Charlotte widow 1837

We know that Terentius died 1851, if she had been married to him, she would have surely mentioned this widowhood on her marriage details.

As I understand British law at that time, you were not permitted in the registration of a child's birth to give the father's surname to the child unless there had been a marriage.

Of course, you can call a child by any name you like in every day life.  I daresay you could say what you liked in census details too.

When it came time for the trip to Australia, probably no-one worried about proof of ID and it would have been much easier to use the Carrighan name for all.

What do others think?
