Does anyone know where these houses would have been in Greenfield
« on: Friday 20 March 09 18:37 GMT (UK) »
My Grandmother was born in 5 White Houses, Greenfield in 1882.

I know the houses were still there in the 60s.

I have located them on the oldmaps site , they were to the left of Greenfield
Road and just down from the Mill Ponds.

I have looked at todays maps but can't pin point the exact location where they would have been.

Is there anyone local who remembers these houses and could say where they were, I have no local knowledge of the area.

Hi Maureen

Am not sure if it is possible but coud you use the co-ordinates of the old-maps map and then locate on the current ordnance survey get-a-map site?

Hello Maureen: I will have a look for these when I go to the cemetery.

I have had a look at a site which deals with old maps and I have located your reference. It is a small hamlet (called Bryn Celyn) between Greenfield and Holywell, very near to St Winefred's Well. The houses if they are still there are set high above Greenfield Road overlooking the mill ponds which are in a valley.
This part has not been redeveloped so there is a good chance they are still standing.

Hello Maureen:
I have just done a satellite ariel search and could not see any white houses. There are some terraced houses but the area borders onto a new development. I will ask when I get there.

Hello Maureen: Went to this area this afternoon and had a good walk about. Nearly all modernised bungalows. No sign of what could be the white houses. Spoke to two long time residents who could not help me. Looks as if they have been demolished.

We have only just found this request. My husband remembers the White Houses, Bryn Celyn. he remembers a Mr. & Mrs. Alcock living there in the 50's and 60's with ther son, also Pamela Adams and Colette Charlton. the houses have gone but we have a copy of an 1870's map with them on. If you want we can send you a copy of it.

Thanks for your reply simmental

How nice to know that someone remembers the houses.  My Gr/grandfather Roger Jones who had been a Market Gardener lived there until he passed away in 1951. Does your husband remember when they were demolished and what is in their place now?
A copy of the map would be much appreciated, thank you.

 Hi,
My husband knew him as 'Jones the Gardener'. He lived in White Cottages but also owned gardens which where on the Holywell Greenfield road opposite the garage. Both the garage and the garden are now houses. He also owned a veg. shop in either Greenfield or Holywell which was called 'Jones the Gardener'. He knows that the cottages where there all the time he was in junior school and he thinks they where demolished between 1957 and 1961. There is nothing in their place now the plot is just part of woodlands.
I'm not sure how to attach a copy of the map to this web site. If you go to www.greenhillfarm.co.uk and email me your address I'll copy it and send it on although I can't guarentee how good it is as it will then be a copy of a copy
