Russian Jews. Completed thanks.
« on: Friday 20 March 09 20:33 GMT (UK) »
 Hello,
Does anyone know of a number of Russian Jews moving to England in the late 1700s/early 1800s? I know the problems with the 'Pale of Settlement' was probably the reason. My husband's ancestor Alexander Levy was a Russian Jew and married in 1809 in Newcastle. Did they settle in established Jewish communities? His children later anglicised their name to Leavey. All were married and baptised in churches, did many Jewish families have to do this?
I would love to know any general details available or any useful links,
        Thanks,
              Sally

* Sally, if you just click on the x in the top right hand corner of the box (as if to close it) it brings up the page and text - no need to do anything else.

Thank you so much Willow,
I have read these articles and they really are interesting. It has made me want to find out more! It seems such a shame they had to change their religion so quickly. It's amazing to think how difficult the journeys from Russia to England may have been. It seems possible that Alexander landed at a different northern port then moved to Bishopswearmouth then Newcastle.
   There's so much I don't know!
Many thanks again for your help and time,
                  Sally

Hi Sally,
It's a pleasure - I've recently become interested in the Russian Jews myself (my son in law is Russian).
I visited the WDYTYA show in London recently, and bought an excellent research book from the following group:
www.jgsb.org.uk
Some useful resources on the site.

Also, a little bit for you on the Jewish community in Newcastle.
http://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/Community/Newcastle.htm

Hope you find it useful - now to leave you in peace (sorry to bombard you!)

Take care,
Paulene
Good luck with your research.

Another site thats well worth a visit http://www.cyndislist.com/
Whilst researching my family name I came across a family from Poland who on arrival were given my family surname. ( Our family records going back to the 1200's)
I have been in contact with various members of the Polish families who couldn't understand why they didn't have UK roots!
A large influx came north to cities like Leeds/Bradford/Manchester/Durham and York.
Other sources are available should you want to know more.

This is the place to visit for all you want to know about the Jewish religion in Britain, including the registration of migrants into the country.
