Griffiths is used as a 'census substitute' as there are no surviving returns from that era. The oldest complete Irish census is 1901.

The results can provide clues to possible locations of connected families.

As far as I know, English marriage certificates, just like Irish ones, only list fathers' names not the mothers' names.

yes they only list fathers names,but i suppose its a start.
