Visited Buckinghamshire! Completed...but it was brilliant :)
« on: Saturday 21 March 09 22:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone...

I am living in Ireland, but am coming to England for six weeks in July.  I am particularly interested in visiting Grendon Underwood, Waddesdon, and areas around High Wycombe.

Since I have begun my family research, I have done it all online, but am eager to look up material for myself. (A visit to TNA is also on th list!)

I intend to visit the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies in Aylesbury, but want to know what I can ask for, or what there is available to see.

Any advice for this trip?

Thanks, Daisy Loo

Hi Daisy,

I try to get all the reference numbers for things before I get to the record office. Time goes quick enough without having to look up the indexes as well.  Especially for TNA Kew.

Try A2A and put in the Aylesbury office..... for Bucks.
  :D Enjoy your trip.

Lesanne.

Hi,

Have you had a look at the Centre's website?  (Just "google")

Should be able to get an idea of what's available, opening times, etc.

The Central library at Milton Keynes has a lot of Bucks parish records on film.

And when you get fed up you can always pop across the road and spend some money at the shops  ;D ;D ;D

Just incase you were nearer there than Aylesbury.

Thank you both...

I have had a look at the Aylesbury centre, and also at Buckinghamshire FHS...but to be honest, I am confused as to what would be relevant to my search.  Rootschat has been so great, in looking stuff up for me, that now I come to do it on my own, I haven't a clue!

I have two family lines that seem to be specific to a village, Waddesdon & Grendon Underwood and then I have various villages where later families tended to move about a bit, around High Wycombe.  The parish records is an obvious one...but what else should I be looking for?  I sound so simple!  ::)

lol...I'll be based in Kent...and at this stage have little money left for shopping!  ;D ;D

Which raises a point as well....I have two small children, and I was planning to do a day trip to Bucks...should I plan a two day trip?

Lesanne...this is great...have found records of a mill in Wycombe marsh...that has employees records...my ancestors were millwrights :)  something might come up there...I could be at this all night! :)

How long do you think I will need?  Do you think one day is enough, or should I gor for two?
