thanks for all that, kris. a lot of spelling variations there.

one thing concerns me. I've just been looking over at rootsweb, and this is a timeline of what I have found on Ellis Packham.

Ellis "Alice" Packham
1806 - born at Northiam, Sussex to Samuel & Elizabeth Packham
1825 - 1st marriage to Thomas Sargent (b. 1798 at Battle, Sussex) at St Mary's, Northiam, Sussex
1825 - Sophia Packham Sargent born at Northiam, Sussex
1827 - Sarah Sargent born at Beckley, Sussex
1829 - George Sargent born at Beckley, Sussex
1832 - Thomas Marsh Sargent born at Beckley, Sussex
1836 - Eliza Sargent born and died at Beckley, Sussex
1838 - Sargent family emigrates to Sydney aboard Woodbridge
1840 - Henry Packham Sargent born at Sutton Forest, NSW
1841 - Jane Elizabeth Sargent born at Sutton Forest, NSW
1842 - Mary Sargent born at Sutton Forest, NSW
1843 - James Sargent born at Sutton Forest, NSW
1844 - 2nd marriage to Aaron Harding  (b. 1802 at Northiam, Sussex) in South Australia
1845 - Aaron Junior Harding born at Sutton Forest, NSW
1848 - William Harding born at Gawler, SA
1851 - 2nd husband Aaron Harding dies at Gawler, SA
1852 - 3rd marriage to Richard Rees (b. 1811 in Maldwyn, Wales) at Gawler, SA
1863 - dies at Butcher's Gap, Kapunda, SA
1877 - 1st husband Thomas Sargent dies at Boorowa, NSW
1879 - 3rd husband Richard Rees dies at Marrabel, SA

see the problem? divorces were very rare in those days amongst the working class, they were all agricultural labourers, yet she remarries twice while her first husband is alive.

tracey, that is all so fascinating. The deeper I delve into the Rees family, the murkier it gets. Wills being destroyed? Wow.

Richard Rees is my maternal Gt-Gt-Gt-Grandfather, so that is how I tie in. my gt-gt-gt grandmother was his 3rd wife, Christiana Blake. I'm very keen on anything you have relating to them.

Thank you so much for your input. One question: is there a record of Thomas and Ellis ever divorcing? or were her subsequent marriages bigamous? I haven't come across a date anywhere for the marriage to Aaron Harding.

As far as I can figure out, Ellis had 3 husbands, 9 children, and a whopping 87 grandchildren!

Cheers

Nudge, I dont know when Thomas and Alice divorced but I would love to find out.....
Ok what i have is the following
on 12th June 1852 Ellis them married Richard Rees, bullock driver of Peachy Belt, Gawler Plains at St. George's Church Gawler, by Rev WH Coombs, the same rev who baptised William Arden in June 1848. At this time she was calling herself Alice Arden - widow. By 1859 it is noted that Ellis was living at Butchers Gap SA and was presented with a Bible by her husband, Richard Rees.It is thought that Ellis may have become religious about then as it is recorded that a Mrs Rees opened a Methodist Church at Butchers Gap in 1860. We have found text tickets, headed Bible christian Society which were issued to Ellis, calling herself Sister Reece, and dated 1860 and 1861 and also to Richard Reece. This church fell into ruins many years ago and there is no longer anything left.

Ellis died 21.10.1863 at Butchers Gap her death was registered by her son, Henry who was married and living at Marrabel. It is known that Richard Rees or Reece called himself a farmer and probably had a piece of land at butchers Gap where he Ellis and the 6 children lived.
There is also a story that Richard Rees destroyed his wife Ellis's will when she died in 1863 andkicked out Aaron and William Harding with only the clothes they stood up in, and that he was aso a drunkard. No one can really be sure what happened, bit it is known that Mary and James Sargent still lived at Butchers Gap until they married approximately 12 months later. It has not been established whether the property was Ellis's or her husbands.
Richard Rees died 9.3.1879 at Marrabel SA and the informant at the time of death was William Polkinghorne, father of William Hardings wife, Honorah. Richard had remarried and his estate went to his wife Christina Rees.
Thats all i have, but if i come across anymore while im searching for the Sargent stuff i will post it here for u
cheers
