William Clayton - 1st Boer War
« on: Monday 23 March 09 21:12 GMT (UK) »
William was my great-grandfather. I have been told by an elderly relative who is his granddaughter that he told her he was in the 1st Boer War.

It ties in with not being able to find him in the 1881 census. How can I check if he was there? The most likely regiment would be the West Surreys as he lived in Woking but they were not there - in India, peacekeeping.

Also, his first wife, Fanny died sometime between 1876 and 1882 and I can;t find any record of her death. Did army wives go to South Africa?

Any help gratefully received.

Hi joy,
I haven't personally researched anyone who was involved in the Boer War; but I found this site and thought it might help you out.
