Fulwood Barracks
« on: Tuesday 24 March 09 11:44 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather, Alexander Warner, appears in the 1851 Census as a sergeant at Fulwood Barracks.  He then disappears until 1891.

I know he was in South Africa as my grandfather was born in Grahamstown, Cape Colony.  He was also in Ireland as other children were born there.

Is there any way I can find out which regiment he was with and what he may have been doing in SA and Ireland.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you found any of these "Army" births on the military index (www.findmypast.co.uk)

That will probably tell you his regiment. OR list the kids with birth year and place and someone may know which regiments followed that pattern.

First child born 1849/50 in Ireland, second 1862 in Grahamstown, Cape Colony, then two more children born Dublin 1870 and 1873.

Alexander was from Wales and his wife from Devon, so he must have already been in the army when his first child was born.

Hi Jan

If you press PREVIOUS a few times in the 1851 Census until you come to a few officers (Ensigns, Lts, Captains or above - not Sergeants) we can then look them up in the Army Lists to discover the regiment.

Tried that Ken.  All I got was the Head of Barracks, but no regiment.

Just  finished having another look at the 52 pages of the 1851 Census for Fulwood Barracks, and I must have missed a page previously which gives a regiment of the 85th Light Infantry.  Sorry about that!!

Brilliant!   I knew he had been in Ireland, Cape Colony, and then Dublin, but it looks like I can add Mauritius in the middle.

Thank you so much!

Hi Jan

What was his wife's name?

For researching the army in Kew see this - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/step4.htm
