Hi Lary
The Cheshire BMD is the most complete free index available, but not all disticts have been fully transcribed. If you go to the page for death searches and click on coverage you will see that Tranmere has only been transcribed for the years 1861-1891,If the death your looking for does not fall between these years it wont be there.
All the registers of BMD for Tranmere are now kept at the Wirral office.

hope this helps

Thanks Peter for the info. --Now I can understand why I couldn't find my ggrandfather for so many years and finally did with the help from over there.
