To be certain you have the correct people,  you really need the 1887 marriage certificate which would give you the names and occupations of their fathers.

But this looks interesting

1871   RG10/5050/102/72

William STephenson 32 tinsmith b Oldham Lancs
Eleanor 29 b Heworth Durham
Catherine 8
William 5
Alice 3
Joshua 1
Alice Stephenson,67 mother b Oldham Lancs

children all b Heworth.

and on the same page - possibly brother - but a bit odd that the children are all named the same (naming pattern?) and are all the same ages.

John Stephenson 24 engineman b Oldham Lancs
Elizabeth 24 b Felling Durham
William 5
Alice 3
Joshua 1

children all b Felling

No way of telling if either or neither of them is the correct family.   Must get marriage cert  ;)

Hi everyone, just got back from a holiday to find my grandads wedding certificate has arrived.I cannot make out some of the writing, are there any experts out there???

Here is a photo of the full certificate,I had a bit play in Photoshop to enhance it as much as possible

Moderator comment: image removed.  Only small portions of GRO certificates may be posted.

In this section I cannot make out the fathers professions

Cannot make out the profession in this one

In this one cannot make out the bottom witness

I really have you all to thank for getting this far.Open to suggestions as to my next step.I just had to smile when I seen that my great grandfathers name was "George Stephenson"   ::)

It looks like William's occupation may be 'stoker', but difficult to read.  It makes sense as he goes on to be a railway engine driver.

I have found 1871 a William with father George who is an engine driver for the NE railway, but the marriage cert says George is a miner.

Keep looking............

edited:   This looks good to me, father then son on the railway.  But doesn't square with the 'miner' occupation

Does the marriage certificate just have his name as William?   No second name?
