Rick
Could you possibly look in the index and see if you can find a Thomas Gillespie as this was Catherines father.
Thanks
Sue

Sue

The only GIL(L)ESPIES listed on the 1851 St Giles index were as follows.

Mary Ann – HO107/1508 Folio 369a

William & Sarah – HO107/1509 Folio 405a

Resurrecting this thread after over 10 years!

Sue - did you ever find Basil Sandys in 1851?  I am still looking for him (possibly with daughter Eliza(beth) born c1841 (first found in 1860 marriage in Aghaderg, Ireland).

We know Basil became an excise officer in 1827 (index to papers in National Archive), but I have no idea when he moved from Ireland to England, or when/where his wife Catherine (Geraghty) died.

All the best
Philip

Can't believe it's ten years.

No I've never found him in 1851, so must presume he was in Ireland.
There is a marriage in St George, Hanover Square in 1850 of an Edwin Sandys to a Johanna Ryan, father listed as Basil. I think this might be the Edwin with Basil in 1841. I can find nothing else about them after marriage.
Have you checked Ancestry, the banns for a marriage for Basil were called in 1840, Basil listed as a widower, said marriage didn't take place, maybe he was rumbled. I get the impression he was a bit of a philanderer.
There are some reports of him being in the workhouse for illness, between 1841 and 51.
I expect you already know the story of his six children in Ireland and how he beat his daughter.

I get the feeling Basil was not a good family man.  I saw the report in the Longford Journal of him battering his 13 yr old daughter.  He is not with a wife on the 1841 census, although he is with 4yr old Edwin.  Where are his other children?  I have to wonder if he left Catherine (Geraghty) in Ireland (perhaps with Roscommon rellies or in Longford)

Timeline seems to be:
1800 bapt 31 Aug Rathkeale
1822? married (1) ?
1827 applies to become excise officer (papers in National Archive, Kew)
1837 (21 Sep?) married (2) Catherine Geraghty
1839 Church St, Longford, excise officer, batters daughter.  Has 6 children (Longford Journal)
1841 on census in Marylebone with Edwin age 3 (born in county)
c1841 daughter Eliza(beth) born (age 19 on marriage in 1860)
1855 married (3) Catherine Otter, Strand, Mar qtr 1855
1861 on census in St Giles with wife Catherine and daughter Sarah age 4
1871 died 7 Jul, St Giles

Lines in bold are supported by documentation, other entries are speculative.

Philip

I also found the above on Family Search, a lady called Margaret Wilson, died in New York, the death giving her parents names as Basil Sandys and Catherine Dillon.

Another Catherine?  What was going on?

If Margaret Wilson (Sandys-Dillon) died in 1917 aged 87 then for her father to be our Basil she would have been born c1830 and have to have been the daughter of Basil's first wife (whose name I don't know). Her birthplace was given as London - if this is correct Basil would have to have left Ireland by 1830, then been in Longford in 1839, then in Marylebone in 1841.

I think I will have to post a new message asking if anyone is near Kew and can see what is on Basil's excise application form.
