Naval Pensioner
« on: Saturday 28 March 09 01:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Came across a chap in the 1881 census, Matthew Munn living in Portsea, who was described as a naval pensioner.  I need some advice please on where to look for records of this chap, service and/or pension.

Thanks

Hi Paulene

Thanks for that, I had seen it.  Problem is I live in Australia, bit far to come for the weekend  ::)

On the balance of probability I'm sure he would have been a rating as his son was a farm hand.

I guess I was hoping for some other source that I hadn't thought of.

Thanks again

Bob, Might it have meant he was a Greenwich Pensioner?

maybe by 1881 the rules about Service[Navy & Army] pensions had changed but I'd have a look at Greenwich pensions - I have one as a chelsea pensioner but that was in 1840s- no other sort of pensions around then.

Hi Charlotte

All I know is that his occupation was given as a 'Naval Pensioner'.  However, he would have been an 'Out Pensioner' as he was living in Portsea and before 1901 he had moved to near Croydon in Surrey.  Even if he was classified as a Greenwich pensioner I still have the same problem, I can't get to the the National Archives.  :'(

Thanks again

Naval Pensioner could mean ex-Royal Marine as well as ex-RN. The records of one Michael Munn is on the NA website - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=6815766&queryType=1&resultcount=1. At least with RN records you get a DoB to check before spending your money.

They have started to put Royal Marine records online as well via the Catalogue - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp and putting ADM as the series.

Hi Bob,  have you put his name into the NA site's search facility?
I did that to my Chelsea Out Pensioner and found him- incidentally, he was described on his death cert just a "A Pensioner" not Out -P.

I ordered the appropriate film from LDS and found his pension pay records on it which placed him in the two towns where I had found him by census- so it was a good cross check.

Hi everyone,

This seems to be Matthew Munn in 1861:
On board Her Majesty's Ship 'Conqueror' - Hamoaze, Devonport, Cornwall
Matthew Munn : Ord Seaman b 1839 Huxber, Down, Ireland
Captain of the ship: Cpt. Edward S Sotheby

RG9 Piece 4493 Folio 136  Page 28

So, may be able to find some more information - off to look.

Hi again,
I think the record found by Ken on the NA site looks a good bet:
Munn, Matthew
Official Number:  68933
Place of Birth:  Comber, Down
I also found this - a journal kept by Dr W F O'Vray Date: 1857 (not far off 1861)
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/subjectView.asp?ID=O91675
It might be the same ship.
