George William CLOUGH - Census lookup
« on: Saturday 28 March 09 04:39 GMT (UK) »
I need help to identify my ancestor in the 1861 & 1871 Census Returns.

I know very little about him & nothing of his ancestors.

He was known as George CLOUGH, believed to be born 1860.
Family stories say he was from Keighley, Yorkshire.
I do not know when he migrated to Tasmania.
His marriage registration on 28 Jan 1880 in Tasmania, Australia records him as George William CLOUGH, aged 20. His wife was aged 15.
In 1892 he traded as a Bookseller-Stationer.
In 1899 he traded as a Bootmaker
The most probable headstone for him in Tasmania shows Died 1933 aged 72

The names of his 10 children are;
George William
William Darcy
Jessie
Laura Gladys
Myrtle May
Eileen Beatrice
Ivy Constance
Laurel Ada
Kathleen Lillias Eva
Sterle thomas

I have nothing to doubt that he was born in 1860. Can anyone find him in the 1861 & 1871 Census returns, please?

Regards
Grantley

Do you have the marriage certificate? as I note you just say marriage registration.
This will give his parents names, as well as many other helpful bits.

I sourced the marriage details from an index - The Australian Vital records Index by the LDS.

I wish I knew the names of his parents.

I listed his children, hopefully that name duplication might be a key.

Hello,

I am the granddaughter of Sterle Thomas Clough (my father Joseph Clough is Sterles only child). how are you related to George Clough?
My family now live in New Zealand and sadly do not know many of our clough family. In the last few years have tracked down information on them, and George actually has 11 children. George apparently left his first wife and had another child with another women.
Would love to hear more about our family..

Hi there

Had a look for you regarding George and wondered if you did know for
sure he was born in 1860?
I found a George Clough born in Keighley, and christened on
18th December 1859. His parents were Richard and Ann?
He may not have been registered until the new year making it
1860. He would also only be 20 when he married in January 1880.

Hope you find the rest of the family and lovely that someone else has
come on here and said thats my family too, I just love reading things
like that on this site, its great.
Happy New year.

regards
Sandymc

Hi Sandymc,

Thankyou for pointing out the baptism entry.

My notes suggest that life isn't straight forward on this one.

My mind has been fully emersed in many areas and I need to now revisit this line & pick up the threads.

Grantley

Hi Grantley,

I've just started to research George William Clough for my husband's family. Have you found any more information on him? I've found a few newspaper articles on Trove which are interesting. I can't seem to find when he came to Tasmania either. The information that I have says that he came from Keighley, Yorkshire and that his father was a coal miner and his mother is possibly called Lidia?

Kind Regards,
Lauren
