Hat?  ;D ;D sounds weird...isn't the word longer than hat though?

His sisters were straw plaiters.... his father a millwright, he made agricultural machinary...don't know if that's relevant...

I thought "hat" when I first saw it,but as you say it DOES look longer than that doesn't it?

What's the ref so we can compare it to other words on the page.

Where are they living?

Hmm I see what you mean, although I am wondering if there is something in between hat and manu....... maybe something written after?

I realise it doesn't go with 'Straw', but could it be   HARP?

They sometimes put 'e's on ancient words............. could 'Straw' be the brand name for the harps?

Or, is it definitely something to do with agriculture?   ???

No wonder I couldn't find a John Hillsdon in 1861 that fitted.

I was going by the name Daisy had given the clip-thanks for that DOH!!!
