I believe the rest of the family are on freebmd under other spellings, complicated by the fact that Jane was married before:

Timeline:
Mar 1859 quarter: William Robert Shaw m. Harriet Mercy Phillips, Medway
Mar 1871 quarter: William John Morey m. Jane Phillips, Poplar
1871: Census in Poplar shows William Morey, a lighterman, and wife Jane (20, b. Chatham)
1873: Frederick Sykel m. Jane Morey  in Poplar.
1875: Emma Amelia Sykells born in Poplar
1878: Harriet Mercy Sickles born in Poplar
1880: Jane Florence Sykel born and dies in Stepney
1881: Harriet Mercy Sykel dies aged 3 in Stepney (probably before census)
1881: Jane Sykles, married, b. Chatham aged 31, living in London at 2 Nightingale Lane
1881: Emma Sykla and what is presumably her older half-sister, Elizabeth Morey, are nieces of William R Shaw and Harriet M Shaw
1893: Emma marries as "Emma Sykels" in West Ham.

To sort this out I think the only way to go now is to purchase the marriage cert of Frederick Sykel and Jane Morey in 1873 in the hope that it gives Fredericks fathers name.

Good Luck

Hi Frankie

The only item I can see for Fred* Sykel is marriage to Jane Morey. Morey looks like a married name so by rights both Morey and Phillips should be shown on Emma's birth certificate. Ok but maybe Jane just gave one name.

So only one mention of Fred* and then 1891 there is the census on the other thread's page and the father is shown as
William 46 head b Gateshead-Durham    Boiler Breaker

and 1881 when Jane is by herself and Emma is with uncle William there is
William Sykels         abt 1844     Gateshead, Durham, England     Lodger     Niton, Hampshire staying at The Buddle Inn Occupation:   Smith

So I would say he was traveling earning a living and perhaps he is Frederick William or William Frederick and decided to use the William name but usually middle names are shown in GRO/BMD even if not in census so perhaps he decided to change his name.

You do need the marriage certificate for his father as it might help go further back. I just cannot see the Sykel* or Sykl* name other than the entries around these threads.... But there are so many Sykes it is hard to search for - tried Sikl* and Sike* - some people but no one like yours
