Metal greeting cards
« on: Wednesday 01 April 09 22:01 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know the history of this sort of greeting card? I found 5 of them tucked away in an old family bible? They are all silver metal plates and were given to my mother sometime between 1912 and 1919. Love to have your comments.

Hi Annie

Is there any indication of who sent them.  If your Grandfather was away at the war he may have got them in France somewhere.

All the best

Salut G!

Sorry, but not possible! All these "cards" were given to mother by members of her family living in Newton Heath, England sometime betwween 1912 & 1919 ... all are signed on the back ... has no one in England ever seen or heard of such cards? I can't possibly have the only examples of this sort of thing in my possession??? Did such cards exist in Scotland or Wales?

Bye

Hi Annie

Unless they are hallmarked silver they are the sort of sentimental ephemera that tends to be cleared out after a while.  So they just might be the only surviving examples.  Is there any indication of the maker/publisher?  Are they made in Lancashire?  I did not find anything like them after a very brief google.

Cher Gobbo,

That's wishful thinking! they are just simple silver metal cards with only personal greetings written on the back!

Karen,

Will try your link and keep you both informed

Thanks for all your help

Karen & Gobbo

Still no news on my cards ... finally sent off a scan to the V&A museum (!) as they have a greeting card section ... maybe they will answer me?
