Hi Sue,
I lived in cardiff for 50 yrs b4 moving to holland, but my thoughts would be that the pontcanna area may have come under llandaff diocese as, there is a cathedral there it was once a city, the cathedral will probably hold records for the area. im only guessing but its worth a try. good luck, oh and i know there is some kind of structure in the square in llandaff though my memory doesnt recall if its a war memorial or another type of structure like a cross. hope this helps, ralph.

Thanks for your reply celtic archer- good idea but sadly he doesn't seem to appear on the Llandaff war memorial.

http://www.whitchurchandllandaff.co.uk/War%20Memorial.htm

I used the site above.

Ironically I was in Llandaff last year checking on another side of the family and never bothered to look at the memorial. I recall there were some in the Cathedral as well but think they were for the Royal Welch Fusiliers.

Thanks again

Sue

Hi Sue,
Your welcome, sorry it was not a result, i tried other sites too but even though lots of ww1 men were listed the name you give is not mentioned, i find that strange as the british legion normally exhaustes all avenues to list old soldiers, but to be honest im not very good on the pc and so may have missed something.
my grandad who is long passed away was also a soldier and, i have no info on him other than name and street address, he was alive when i was just a kid about 8 yrs old, i would love to find out some details of him but i just dont know how to do it, silly old git i am lol. but i honor all those who faught for us and, respect you for trying to find answers to your family history. may you get the answers and keep your family history alive. good luck. Ralph.

Dear Ralph
Please start a topic on the Armed Forces part of this forum for your Granddad. I am lucky I know where my Great Uncle is buried etc - all I wanted was a bit of extra info if he was commerated on a memorial.  If you are not sure what to do - then please let me know and I will help

There are a lot of resources we can tap into -

Post your Grand dad's name and what you know - and you are sure to get help - I will try for you.

Hope this helps

Sue,
Many thanx, thats a nice and helpful response, i remember him as a child, he was a very nice man, my family history is rather clouded, maybe there were things in the cupboard best kept silent lol, i know he was  divorced or a widow, as he re-married.  she was a hard women but, also helpful yet strict, his name was richard dyer, he lived in garth place off mynachdy road in gabalfa cardiff, he served in the army and, i believe somewhere like asia, he gave me a japanese pocket watch, he told me he took it from a japanese soldier he had shot, i know he himself was shot through the wrist. the pocket watch i held for about an hour then my dad took it from me for (safe keeping) i NEVER saw it again, i reckon he sold it, mind you in those days money was food, and a large family such as ours needed every penny, I never forgave dad for taking that from me but, i understand it. my dad was a very strict man and not at all like grandad, he was a real gent, i really would love to find out more about grandad, but all avenues are blocked, even my dad says little, he seems imperviouse to any knowledge of his father. which is either ignorent or stupid. my age is 57, my dads is about 85, so grandads must be about 20 yrs older at least. its a huge family sue. yet no one cares to talk of it. my mothers side were named sollis, i know they were pig farmers, mostly in cardiff, the rest is a clouded sky. i think, but only think he could have been named richard stanley dyer, anyway thankyou so much and good luck.
best regards Ralph.

Hello Ralph
There was a Richard Stanley Dyer born 1898 Cardiff 11a 277

I have found a British Army Pension Record for a Richard Stanley Dyer giving the address of
8 Philog Road Birchgrove Cardiff. That sounds like the right area you mentioened.
Number 67485

This shows him discharged 16.12.1918 under para 392 XVI Kings Reg. This means a soldier has suffered impairment to health since entering service. he was wounded in action. Mentions small scars to the forearm.

Looks as if he was in the Devonshire reg. The record shows he was a Farm Hand before joining up.

I can email you details of the documentation. I will send you a personal message later today with this information. Have to go out now.

Sue
