burial record of JOSEPH WEAVING in Wessington?
« on: Friday 03 April 09 12:08 BST (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters

I know quite alot about my great uncle Joseph Franklin Weaving, aka Joe.

Born 1877 in Oxford, he was a veteran of the Boer War by the time he arrived in Stettler, Alberta. He had a homestead for which I have the application forms. He worked in the mines at Bankhead and for the CPR, and also for his neighbours. I have found him in the 1906 census.

I also have a copy of his death certificate - died April 20th 1907, Wessington.

A memorial to him in a small Oxfordshire, UK church tells that he was "gassed in a well in Canada". Is there any chance of discovering where he was buried (if his body was recovered)? Could anyone advise if there are any indexes of Alberta burials?

regards,

KN  :)

Kn, Have you thhought about finding the Library nearest to where he was gassed and ask8i t them if the have archived  the newspapers closest to his death?  These papaers probably carried an account of the incident or to coroners inquiry.
That you have the death ecrt and the exacr date is likely to resonate well with the Library as it shows you have done your bit- get them helping.

let us know how you get on.

 - there are some newspapers online for Alberta, but they are not indexed (pick a city, or pick a date, and see which ones they have).

http://www.afhs.ab.ca/data/cemeteries/search.php
 - and some cemeteries are indexed here (can't see any Weavings there).

Dear Charlotte and Jorose

Thanks for the great suggestions!

I have just emailed the Stettler Independent which, on its website, says that it has been published for over 100 years.

Will also check out the suggested links.

Will report back!

regards

Progess so far .................

No response to my email to the Stettler Independent but I have just found an exciting opportunity on the Alberta Genealogical Society's website - they have a database of Albertan cemeteries and will do a search of it for a donation.

So I've just emailed them ........

Now just wait and see!

WHAT A RESULT!

My message to the Alberta Genealogical Society was picked up by a fantastic volunteer called Norma, who searched the cemetary records for Joseph but to no avail.  However, she didn't give up - she then searched the local paper and found a report of the incident that caused his death, then she found a report from the local RCMP officer and the probate documents, copied the lot and posted it to me.

A very exciting package arrived in the post this morning.

Norma thinks that Joseph was buried in Stettler cemetery but as his grave isn't marked it isn't recorded in the cemetery record.
