Yes please Nick, that's what I meant, how to record the shape of the stone, an arch, a rectangle, I'm sure they all have certain names, one of the ones I could see was on a cross that had IHS in the middle, don't know what that means.

Newbie, If you go back to the first page of this thread you will see Pam's suggestion of Rod Neep's page on the subject  http://www.british-genealogy.com/resources/graves/recording.htm

It's worth printing out, as it covers everything you need to know,

Jane

Going back to Keith's point, that inscriptions read 30 or 40 yrs ago, cant be read today. The Society of Geneologists, in their vast collection of info, has various records of Monumental inscriptions. Cant remember details, it is some years since I went there.
I just remember I found the transcription of 2 vital gravestones in our family, one of which had been replaced since, and the other now virtually irreadable. The bit we couldnt make out at all turned out to be 'buried in Buenos Aires' - we would NEVER have guessed that of an ag lab family! But further investigation revealed (including letters to Buenos Aires cemetery) that she was a servant to a family who emigrated, and was so well thought of was buried in the family plot, with an inscription refering to 'our faithful servant'
So keep at it - you never know what you will find!!!!

Yes, Lizdb,
They do indeed have volume after volume of transcribed M.I.'s at the Society of Genealogists in London.  However, it costs between £40 and £50 for a year's membership, and admission as a non-member just for the day is not particularly cheap either.  I don't seem to get there as often as I used to, and am wondering about re-subscribing next year...
But trying to track down records of the M.I.'s in the London Parishes is extremely time-consuming, even at the S.O.G...
