Paul,

Reading through the detail published so far, I think his service was in the Territorial Force both during and after ww1, as opposed to a mixture of regular and territorial postings.

Tremendous story to research.

His service history should be interesting (remember to ask for photocopies).

Keep us informed as you get the detail.

Ps. I read with wry amusement his bar entry, led the troops well..kept them together in the retreat..fought a brave rearguard action..that must have been one memorable day!

Regards

Pete

He doesn't have a lanyard.  Engineers wear a black lanyard on their right shoulder, but it used to be another colour - maybe white.  I don't know when it changed, so that is a clue too.

Now I look at it again you must be right. The ranks do go steadily upwards (now I read Bt. as Brevet and understand it). The bars on the Efficiency medal suggest he joined the TA in 1915 so that fits in too.

I'm looking forward to his service record too. It may be a while as I will have to pay for it.

I was browsing and stumbled on this old post so I thought I'd update the details I have - mostly in homage to granddad rather than asking for more information.

I finally managed to get hold of his war record. Very interesting reading. Am I right that he achieved the rank of Major three times? Once in the TA in WW1, once between wars, again in the TA, and once during WW2 while responsible for the defence of the Orkneys and Shetlands. Sounds out-of-the=way but this is Scapa Flow people - wow!
