Is/was this a place in Somerset?
« on: Tuesday 07 April 09 13:46 BST (UK) »
Hello,
1851 census  HO107   1558    333   14
I have found in the 1851 census a George Puddy POB Calcott Somerset.  I am trying to find out where this place is in Somerset.
I know that many, many Puddy's were born in Somerset but was anyone else of 'my' family born in Calcott?
Any help gratefully received,
Thanks,
Abiam

Calcot appears to be in Berkshire (Reading area), so I think it is likely to be Catcot
Ayres Brignell Cornwell Harvey Shipp  Stimpson Stubbings (all Cambs) Baumber Baxter Burton Ethards Proctor Stanton (all Lincs) Luffman (all counties)

Thank you all.

I have George Puddy as a widower on the 1861 and living at 5, America Street, St Saviour, Southwark with two children.

I have since found he married for the second time to Frances Jones December 1867 in Lambeth.   They were still together on the 1871 but George died in Oct 1889, Kensington, and Frances was in the St Saviours Union Infirmary, Newington by the 1891 census and died in Jun of the same year.

I cannot find a death for George's first wife Catherine Puddy, (Donovan) born Ireland, between 1853 (last child) and 1867 his 2nd marriage.  Most of her life was either in Clerkenwell or Southwark.

I am cross eyed from looking!  If anyone can find her it would finish off this twig!  I am going to have one more look!

Thanks,
Abiam

Hi Abiam,

FreeBMD isn't 100% complete for the years between 1853 and 1861 (www.freebmd.org.uk/progressD.shtml), so I searched the complete index for the quarters that are shown as incomplete on FreeBMD and found

Mar 1856
Catherine Puddy
St Saviour 1d 20

Hi there

There are not many entries for Catcott on this web site, but a few for the Puddy family.

Will see if I can find a baptism next time I am at the Reccords Office.
