*Completed* Eastbrooke Church
« on: Tuesday 07 April 09 14:14 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Can anyone tell me if the Eastbrooke Church (down town Bradford) was Methodist? I have a
post card from my G Aunt to my G Grandmother because they had attended a rally when my ggma and ggpa were in Bradford visiting the month before. I also was interested in finding out if there was a cemetery for this church? Does anyone know if there was a Methodist church near 554 Manchester Rd. and if so, did it have a cemetery? I have only come to your site recently and I find it very helpful.
Thank you in advance, Gala Girl

Hi Gala Girl,
Sorry but I've no way of knowing where 554 is or was. Manchester Road was extensively redeveloped and widened late 60's or early 70's. Lots of buildings were demolished.
There were several Methodist and Wesleyan Methodist Chapels along and just off Manchester Road (even more pubs) here are some chapels that were open in the 60's
Central Hall Manchester Road - think this had a graveyard that was moved for redevelopment.
Bethel Ryan St.
Park Chapel New Cross St.
West Bowling Wesleyan Rydal St. Had a graveyard.
New Cross St. denomination not known
Cotewall St. denomination not known
Marsh St. Marshfields denomination not known

Thanks so much,
If they demolish a cemetery do they
move the remains to another location?
I hope.

Gala Girl,
I don't know what the official policy is but I seem to remember some controversy when the workmen who were digging the foundations for new buildings near the City center end of Manchester Road, unearthed bodies that had been interred in a cemetery there. Perhaps this was Central Hall Methodist ?
This was not the first time that this type of event occurred in Bradford I also remember a similar event at the site of a graveyard in Queensbury!

Hi,
I forgot to ask
Where does Eastbrook Hall fit in ? As Oly pointed out it wasn't in Manchester Road.

Also postal numbers tend to run from the City center outwards so I think 554 might have been somewhere near the ring road (Smiddles Lane / Rooley Lane). If the numbers are the same as they were in your time frame you should be able to get an idea of the location from a postcode search - http://postcode.royalmail.com

Hi,
It would have been about 1911. My Ggrandparents were visiting my Great
Aunt Agnes. She took them there for a
rally. I was just trying to locate where
she and her family might be buried. They lived at 554 Manchester Rd.. I was told yesterday they might be at Bowling Cemetery. It was close to them. That sounds to me ,like a real possibility.
Thanks for the reply, Gala Girl
