Selby Cemetery
« on: Wednesday 08 April 09 11:13 BST (UK) »
Would anyone be able to check for a headstone in Selby Cemetery for me, please?  :)

It's plot no. 3485, Tennant Smith who died November 1914 aged 58 years.

He is listed as a pedlar on his burial and death certificate, so it may well be that they weren't well off enough for a headstone, but others in this family, whilst being only hawkers/pedlars, have had quite grand funerals, so I'm hoping that he did too.

Thanks for any help,

Jo.

Hi Jo,

I can't help about the headstone but he was found drowned in Selby Canal & has been buried in Consecrated ground.

Try ringing Andrew Argyle on 01757 708449 which is the name/number given on the Selby Town Council (Cemetery page).

Thanks for that Gill, I'll try giving him a ring next week.

I'd found his burial on the old familyhistoryonline website, and was intrigued because it said he drowned in the canal.

Tennant Smith isn't a direct ancestor, he's a brother of my OH's 2xGt-Grandmother.  I haven't found him on the 1911 census yet, and apart from giving me the date of his inquest his death cert wasn't much help (he was 'of no fixed abode', cause of death was 'no evidence to show how, where or when he came by his death', and the informant was the coroner).

Selby library is having a look for me to see if they can find anything in the local papers of the time which will hopefully shed some more light on things, and tell me if his wife was still alive and/or give me some other family names.

Jo.

I'm in Selby cemetery on Wednesday, will ask Mark, the gravedigger, he's a great font of knowledge.  Gwet back to you after Wednesday

Oooh, thanks for that.  ;D

I've got a copy of the newspaper report on his inquest now, but haven't got any further than that as yet.

Look forward to hearing from you in a few days.

Jo.
