King Family of Ireland - Help Please
« on: Wednesday 08 April 09 13:33 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I have no experience of trying to trace people in Ireland so can someone please help, guide/assist me in tracing Irish ancestors please?

I am looking for John & Jane King in Ireland pre 1851.

I have traced them in England in the 1851 census aged 37 and 38 respectively. John's trade is a Coalminer. The family reside in Heworth, Gateshead

In 1851 their children are -

James aged 14 born Ireland - Laborer

Mary aged  12 Born Ireland

Elizabeth aged 10 Born Ireland

Jane aged 8 Born Ireland

John Aged 1 Born Gateshead, England

Noting that the children Jane was born in Ireland and John in England it would appear that the family moved to England between 1844 to 1850

Neither their religion nor county of residence in Ireland is known, although I suspect they were not a Catholic family

Any advice or assistance greatfully received

Full Civil registration began here in Ireland in 1864, so too late for any of your King family. Non-Catholic marriage registration commenced in 1845.

no complete census before 1901 has survived, and also too early for Griffiths Valuation so the next step is Parish records - but without a location (parish, townland etc) the search is going to be difficult.

I dont imagine that the King surname would be that common in Ireland - which might narrow your search a little ...

As Shane has said, you can't start tracing the family in Ireland without a location but have you tried getting birth record/baptism for younest child who was born in England to get mother's maiden name?

I am not very familiar with that area of England but there are only about three births of a John King in Tyne & Wear, that I can see on freebmd around the right time, two of which look like they could be in the correct area ....

Mar 1849
   KING    John        Newcastle T.    25   393
Mar 1850
  King    John Smith         Newcastle T.    25   382

It will not help locate them in Ireland at present but I naturally thought that Jane's maiden name was a bit of information that you would want to get anyway and if at a later date you find more information that allows you to start searching in Irish church records then her maiden name might be needed to confirm that you have found details of the correct King family.

A google search of the surname in Ireland produced the following result:

In Ireland in 1890 King was the eighty-sixth most numerous surname and the estimated number of bearers was 9,000.

In that year the surname was chiefly found in Galway, Dublin, Antrim, Mayo and Limerick.

It was also a very common surname in Co. Londonderry.

It also may be worthwhile tracking the Irish born King children forward as far as possible on the English census, as sometime more details are included for place of birth in later years. This may point to a place of origin and marriage for John & Jane
