Hello Danielle,

Good to hear from you. My own research is stalling really, although I should devote some more time to tidying up my write-ups.

Finding Mendel's and Raphael's parents' names is a great breakthrough.  Did you see the death record for Estera Kaplan in 1886?

It would indeed be fascinating to see the original records. Can you order them directly from the Kalisz archives?

I have been thinking about Rose too. In the near vicinity to Kalisz, certainly Szajnik or Szajniak are possibilities. However, try searching for 'starting with Szeni'. The name Szenig/Szenik pops up in a place called Zdunska Wola, about 60 km ESE of Kalisz. Unfortunately, the records for that shtetl seem quite sparse, but it is the only place where the name is recorded in the 1830s. Interesting.

Justin

Ah yes, tidying up write-ups! Now there's a good idea that I've still to pursue. I think I'm more an an amasser than a sorter of info at the moment.

I saw two death records for an Estera Kaplan, one in 1886 and one in 1888. No idea if one of them is her, though imagine one must be. Interestingly her son Benjamin called his daughter born 1893 Esther and her grandson Harris (my great grandfather) called his first daughter Esther, born in 1892 (yes, bit of an age gap thing going on there). My middle name is Esther too, but that's just a coincidence, albeit a nice one!

I'm not sure about ordering directly from the Kalisz archives but think they are available through the mormon centre http://www.familysearch.org  When I made enquiries previously I found I would have to go to a centre to order records then go to view rather than order online but I think this might have changed. However it all looks so complicated I haven't the will to pursue it at the moment!

Thanks for the info on Rose which I will pursue.  A cousin recently sent me a photo of her which I was going to post up here but it seems I don't have that option. It was the oldest relative whose photo I've seen, prob early 1900s.  My husband's family have a lovely little painting of his 3 x great grandmother from early 1800s (they're the posher side...).
