Christys of fivemile town
« on: Wednesday 08 April 09 18:21 BST (UK) »
Hello

we have traced my great grandfather to fivemile town in county tyrone. he married a Margaret gibson in 1900, his name was william christie b c 1870 but we think it may have been christy when he was in ireland. we would love to find out more information about margaret and william.
we believe that william was born in the workhouse and went to work on a farm when he was 10 years old, we are told that it was there he met margaret. apparently william was a gamekeeper and margaret a cook though this is only family story and we have no evidence to support this.
can anyone tell me how i would go about finding more information about these 2 ancestors. i think i have a marriage reference for them
Married on 5th july 1900 in fivemiletown county tyrone NI clogher parish church of ireland                but i have no idea how to use this tiny bit of information to actually order a marriage certificate, especially as we are not sure of the surname spelling.
can anyone help guide me in the right direction?
They left NI in approx 1902-1908. the family story is that they left ireland on a boat set for america but that there was a huge storm and the boat was damaged and blown off course ( i know its one of those family tales ) it eventually came to land in paisley scotland ( which is not on the coast as such) the family couldnt afford to wait for the boat to be fixed so they went inland to work and eventually settled in linlithgow (near edinburgh).  though apparently margarets brother did continue onto ireland when the time came.

william and margaret went on to have 7 children and over 30 grandchildren, so there are lots of decendents from these 2 people it would be lovely to be able to find out more about where we all come from.

If you have the names of bride and groom, date and exact location of marriage you can order a transcript of the marriage entry from the local Registration Office - most places in NI charge around £4 and it's usually the cheapest option (unless you want an actual certificate).

Contact Dungannon Registrar http://www.dungannon.gov.uk/index.cfm/area/page/categorykey/57

Marriage: 5 July 1900 Fivemiletown Church of Ireland, William Christie to Margaret Gibson

This will be the correct spelling/date/church but I don't think you can check anything else before ordering (but you could ring them and ask).  I also found the marriage of Robert Gibson and Anne Adams, but nothing forJohn Christie (any spelling).

Marriage: 17 Dec.1867 Enniskillen Civil Registrars Office, Robert Gibson to Anne Adams

The local registrar for this marriage is in Enniskillen:-

Hi,
These are my great grandparents, and are buried in Linlithgow. William came over to Scotland in search of work and worked on the farms. As far as i know Margaret's brother eventually went to the USA as he couldn't settle and had to be on the move.
There is a huge family here all still still living in the same area.

Kill townland halfway between Clogher and Fivemiletown, and where the Christie's lived.

Mossfield subtownland which was the residence of Margaret Christie (nee Gibson) at the time of her marriage.
