historical weather forecast
« on: Thursday 09 April 09 21:19 BST (UK) »
Evening
Does anyone know of a web site that has weather statistics.
IE: is there any way of finding out what the weather was doing for a certain day, date.
Probably a daft question but I assume there must be records.
Thanks in advance.
Tina

Hi Tinav,

I am in NSW Australia, and have noticed that various newspaper online sites have prevailing weather conditions in almost every issue.  This seems to apply whether I am looking at papers in New Zealand, North America, Australia or the United Kingdom, and whether I am looking at 1700's right through to current times.

So, once I have established the relevant dates for bdm of my forebears, I try to find a newspaper online for that location and date, and add to my notes any interesting comments.  For example, I have found an eclipse occured on same day as one set of great grandparents married, and in the town where they married there was torrential downpour, and the local shops were flooded.  A butcher's assistant borrowed a horse, rode the horse through the shop, got the carcasses out and was a bit of a local hero in the newspapers.  Of course, with all that activity, the paper did not have a notice of the marriage of my humble forebears!

Cheers, MA

Thanks Mary Ann
I will have a look to see which newspapers I can get access to.
The Gale site was free for a while but I can't access it at the moment.
I appreciate the advice though.
The sort of information you have for the day your great grandparents married is what I'm looking for.

I have access to Gale site from here in NSW, but not via Ancestry, if you give me the date and general idea of locality etc I will try to find info for you. Cheers, MA

Hi Mary Ann
That's really nice of you. :)
I am looking for weather in and around the Cotswolds and south Worcestershire/ Gloucestershire border.
The thing is I have that many dates I wouldn't really now where to ask you to begin.
Maybe I could ask you to look up the winter of 1881. I think that the weather was pretty extreme and I read somewhere that the river Avon was frozen Also that in Evesham [ Worcestershire] and the surrounding villages there were 6 foot snow drifts. I read it somewhere years ago but can't remember where.
If you can find anything that would be great.
Tina

Many of our online services will be unavailable, including .....Databases from home .... I will try again after lunch on Sunday.  and get back to you then.

Cheers, MA.
