Problem with Free BMD
« on: Thursday 09 April 09 21:24 BST (UK) »
I have just been trying to check the marriage of Jane Fryer and found her -Gloucester Dec qtr. 6a 493.  The problem is there are only three names on the page and when I look at the scan, I get a page full page of Jacksons.
I was hoping to find she married a William Bodnum or Badnum.

I know I can reject the scan but in the meanwhile is there any way I can find the marriage?

Sue

Hi

You didn't mention the year but, as I'm sure you know, it was 1862.

The extracted marriage record is indexed on IGI at www.familysearch.org

JANE FRYER
WILLIAM BOELMAN
24 November 1862
St Nicholas, Gloucester

You only need one spouse's name, plus the reference, to order the certificate from the GRO.

Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)

Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)

If you had any doubts the 1871 census shows a William Bodnum with wife Jane living in Gloucestershire.  A daughter Florence aged 8 ties in nicely with the marriage date of 1862 and Ann is correct you only need the one ref to order the cert  :D

William's name does appear in the full GRO index for the Dec qtr of 1862.  Unfortunately the page to which I have access is so unclear that I can't tell whether it says Bodman, Bodnam or Boelman (if I had to plump for one I'd say Bodnam).

Hi,

It says William Bodnam in Dec Qtr 1862 but someone has overwritten the page numbers at the end and his has been written as 433 instead of 483.  It still doesn`t show on the search though so he is one of the many that have been missed.

Regards,
Mo

It seems to appear as both BODNAM and BODMAN but with different page numbers, perhaps because it was so faint (neither name appears on Free BMD in that quarter).  It shouldn't be BOELMAN as it comes alphabetically before BODSWORTH and BODY.
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Thanks everybody for your replies - I wasn't sure if the ref. for Jane was correct but I shall now go ahead and order the certificate.

It's a good idea if you come across a bad transcription of and index entry on FreeBMD to submit a correction, for the next searcher
