Lamb Wood Chapel,Selby
« on: Friday 10 April 09 15:37 BST (UK) »
The 1911 census shows my WARD ancestors living at LAMB WOOD CHAPEL,HADDLESEY,SELBY. Does anyone know anything about this address and if it still exists?
CHARLES WARD is shown on the 1911 census as a coachman/gardener and is married with one son George Maurice aged 5months. There are other WARD relatives shown at the same address.
Hope you can help.
Cyndy

Hi

There is a Chapel Haddlesey, Selby.

Google that and a map will come up for it. I will have a look for Lamb Wood within.

Hi

In 1881 at Chapel Haddlesey, there was a farm called Lamb Wood, I am wondering if there is some connection to that. I haven't found anything on today's maps on line so I will see if we have an OS map I can check

Hi

Had a look on an OS map 1:25000 scale and there is no Lamb Wood farm that I can see. There are a few little buildings showing which are probably now disused. Sorry.

In 1881 after the farm was a rectory so if you could find an old map it would be somewhere round about there. There is a place of worship on the map at the junction near Fox Lane.

Hi Evie, Thanks for all your look-ups.The address now makes more sense with the commas in the correct places!!I`m not familiar with that area at all but I do have relatives who live near York so we will explore on my next visit.
I notice that you have WARDS of York in your surname list.Could there be any link with mine? My grandmother GERTRUDE CHARLOTTE BLANCHARD was married to CHARLES WARD.
Cheers, Cyndy

Hi Cyndy

Good luck with your search when you visit York.

I don't think I have any Charles Wards in my tree but I will certainly get in touch if I find I do. My Wards originated from Cheshire and then moved to the Wath on Dearne, Mexborough area.

A little update on Lambs Wood farm.
I contacted someone from Chapel Haddlesey Council who asked an 80year old friend if he knew of the farm. He remembers that the access road to the farm was east of Eastfield Farm.It was a half mile long access from the road to Temple Hirst, north, away from the river, near the boundary with Temple Hirst. So hopefully when I visit my relatives who used to live near Selby we might be able to pinpoint the area.
Evie could you explain your mention of a `rectory` in one of your messages. Was the rectory near the farm or was the farm at one time a rectory?
Thanks,
Cyndy

Hi Cyndy

Sorry I probably confused you. When I looked at the 1881 census to try and pinpoint where Lambs Wood Farm was I looked at addresses at either side of that particular image i.e of Lambs Wood Farm. The next place the enumerator visited was the Rectory so I gathered that would be the nearest building to where the farm once stood. Really it was just another place which could possibly be still standing or a building that someone could remeber it being there. Sometimes they have been renovated and called the Old Rectory or something similar.
