there are masses of errors on my family name, and many more missing, i dare say it will be an expensive trudge.

All the corrections (only a half dozen or so) I have submitted have been accepted. The email saying so did take quite a while to arrive - probably 6-8 weeks after I submitted the correction.
So, if you find mis-transcriptions do report them - but your report will need to be based on the original image, not on how someone was known in other documents or on other censuses.

My grandad is missing too - Arthur Meehan born 1897 in Darlington (although he was fond of saying he was an Irishman). Found his mum and 3 of his brothers at one address, transcribed as Meehan. Found his dad and another brother at another address transcribed as Meehan. Found the eldest brother with his wife and kids transcribed as Muhan. Don't know where Grandad and his brother Tommy (born 1893) have got to. I've tried everything, wildcards the lot (Meehan, Mehan, Mohan, Muhan, Mihan, Meekin, Meekon, Mein, Mean are some of the transcriptions I have seen in other years).

If anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful.

Wotty.

Inicky, if your ancestors filled in a form, then it's there - you just haven't found it yet.  Having just spent about an hour informing Ancestry of several transcription errors in the 1871/1881/1891/1901 censuses, I can assure you that the problem is not confined to the 1911 census, but the 1911 census is probably an aggrevated problem, because it's not the enumerator's reports that are transcribed, but the (often bad) handwriting of the householders themselves.

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.
