Hello  there

Do  you  have his  mothers maiden name at all?  It  will  be  helpfull  to see if  perhaps  she died  in Australia  too.

Hi Mima,

Do you know if he came as a child, with his parents or perhaps as an adult, by himself? The reason I ask, is if he came while a child, perhaps his arrival details are found in the NSW State Archives, cause most of the east coast of (edit to add Mainland) Australia was all just the (edit ONE) colony until mid 1850's. Edit to add : I almost overlooked Tasmania and Western Australia.
In any case, there are various online indexes that are free to search, and there are good clues to finding passenger lists on each of the various states listed on the Australian Resources at this link.

Everyone on these boards is good at helping each other.  I have SMITH forebears, arriving in 19th Century from UK, so I know the hassles in trying to find them, haven't found my John Smith Y E T, but have got lots of tips to share if you need help, so please ask.

Cheers,  MA

SMITH Joseph  b. Newcastle on Tyne
MAGRATH Ellen b. Tipperary
1869  Reg#3734

I think I have located the correct Joseph b.1833 with parents Andrew and Mary and siblings on the 1841 and 1851 census.  His occupation on the 1851 - coal miner. I am unable to locate him on the 1861 census.   His parents are on the 1861 census with two of his siblings.

Victorian shipping indexes

Joseph's death certificate should show time in Australia and in each State.

Hi mima :)

Mentioned the census only to attempt to narrow down the time frame that Joseph  emigrated to Victoria ie if he disemarked in that state and not NSW.

As mentioned on my previous thread, his death certificate should detail his time in Australia.  Do you have it?   If so you may like to search the shipping links given on previous post.

Cheers
