Elizabeth COOK, Jersey
« on: Monday 13 April 09 14:03 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have an Elizabeth COOK born 1857 in St Helier, Jersey. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for online records for this time/place?
She later married Joseph PARKER on the Isle of Wight in 1874.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mel

Hi Mel

Sadly there are no online records for Jersey BMD's. It is still manual look-ups in the indexes and then sending off for the certificate. I can find the index entry for you later this week when everywhere is open.

Hi Stewart, that would be great if it's not too much trouble. I think I have her on the Isle of Wight in the 1861 census aged 6 so maybe born 1855+? She doesn't look to be with her parents though as she's at the bottom of the list of family and the only child not born in Ryde IoW, even though there are some older and younger than her.
I would appreciate anything you can do, Jersey is a bit of a long way from here!
Thanks again,
Mel

Hi Mel

How confident are you that the EC you have found is the correct one? The reason why I ask is that I caanot see an EC born in St Helier 1855 +/- 2 years. Also she would have married when 17 which although possible is not the norm.

However, having said all that I can see the birth of an Elizabeth Ann Cook in St Martin, 18th Jan 1849 to 4th May 1857 on page 98.

I have followed the census info backwards;
1901 in Littlehampton - she is Elizabeth Parker, aged 46, born Jersey
1891 in Littlehampton - aged 36, born St Helier, Jersey
1881 in Ryde, IoW - aged 26, born St Helier, Jersey
1871 - can't find her
1861 in Newchurch, Ryde - aged 6, born Jersey

So 1855 is maybe closer, but all info points to St Helier.

Maybe her marriage certificate is the way to go, at least then I will have at least her fathers name to help assist in any enquiry. I appreciate your help though, I hope it didn't cause you too much inconvenience.

Hi Mel

When you have the marriage certificate, and therefore her fathers name, I'll check the birth record of the EC from St Martin and see if it is the same.

Let me know.
