Hi mfb...just wondering, do you know about "dit" names? Can be very confusing, as they are not properly family names....if Jean Felix Naud's "dit" name is Labrie, the family name will be Naud.

Just in case you aren't confused enough already ;D

Cheers,

Thank you. I did read that French Canadian's added dit names that designated the area they colonized to distinguish them from French relatives. It's almost like they don't want us to find them. I have seen the Naud name in my research. A lot of the information here to verify.  I found a record of John Cole and Philendy married in 1814.
Once i clarify Felix and Hannah I have good threads to follow.
I appreciate your help

There were a lot of reasons for choosing a dit name, and depending on how far back it was added, the dit name may have become the family name. Or the family name may have become the dit name... :P

You can never have too much confusion ;D

Ordinarily, I wouldn't even mention the subject, but it seems you are really dealing with a dit name, so you should be aware of the possibilitites. Here's a decent article on dit names, and there are others...try googling...

One thing that may be to your advantage is that Labrie is not a common Quebec name...if you were researching Simard or Charbonneau it would be a different story ;D So you may have great success... ;D
