Hi
Sorry I dont have any clues, I'm not sure which side of the family he is related to.   There are no clues on the "post card" either, but somebody had stuck it into a photo album.

Hi Jan

The best guesstimate that I can give from all the various evidence (see the links that I've given earlier) is 1901-1910.

One thing that might give some clues is the photo album -  who were the photos that are close by of? What broad date were they?

Hi
Thanks for your help, but the album was found amongst my grandma's things when she died 20 years ago, so again I dont know who any of the people are.

ive had a lot to do with rugby over the years coaching  at the sunderland  club and getting the game back into schools.i looked at the shirt and done a bit digging i cant find any rugby top with laced up neck from any era even a 100 years ago i think laced up top would have been a bit dangerous then as it would be a big no no now.
regards neil
kenny from ireland befre moveing to north shields  flaxen/flexon from cumnor then sunderland robinson from rothbury then north shields urqhart somewhere in scotland then sunderland

So, it's a footballer then  :)

Think that we'll have to go back to my earlier date - and early rather than late 1900s. The shirt, shorts and boots fit with is time frame.

It's that hairdo that has me baffled. It looks modernish  :-\

Here's a picture of a relative who played football for Broadway United; Distillery [originally West Belfast, now Lisburn Distillery]; Cliftonville; Swansea Town (1920-1921); Barnsley (1922-1922); Barn United (Carrickfergus); Portadown; Ards.
He was born 1900 so the picture had to have been taken a while after that (think c1922).
He seems to be wearing the same style lace-up top but unfortunately it's not a full-length photo.

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

If you have a look for example at a history of Arsenal in this Encyclopedia of British Football it would appear to be fashionable in the 1922 photo

If you ran through the history of other clubs you would get a cross fix on that date.

My father played for a number of sides from about 1920 -1931 and he never wore that type of jersey. The link that I put up earlier:

http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Articles/History.htm

shows a number of strips.  The crew neck/drawstring came in in 1901-ish and:

Quote
During the 1930s several innovations to kit design appeared. The laced crew neck began to disappear in favour of collared shirts with a short fly

So it could be a wide time frame. The picture gives conflicting messages.
