33 Michael Street-Waterford City - Completed
« on: Tuesday 14 April 09 13:38 BST (UK) »
Hi, I recently received information that my Great Grandparents, had a successful
business in Waterford, at the above address, this would be around he late
1800's - early 1900's.

The information says that, he was a basket maker (weaver) and that he died around 1911.
I've done quiet a lot of research on this area, Pigots and Thoms directories have been very
useful, so to, the on line portals. however, I'm yet to establish if he actually owned the premises, or
indeed, the business. From what I can gather, there were other people, living/working there at the
same time, but with different names to his.

His name was- William O'Neill, and apparently married an- Anastasia Howell. Although I can't find any
mention of her in those directories, I do have a index for their marriage, through the LDS pilot site.

Would there be anyone out there, who would know anything about these premises, it's history, or
of the people mentioned above, or others, whom may have worked/lived there, around the time in question.

Regards, Mike.

You could write to Waterford Archives, High Street Waterford City, if you wanted information on that building.

Thank you Shane.
I was aware of the name- James Somers at that address, but not Richard O'Neill.
Now more intrigued. I'm unaware of a Richard in the family at that time, but he may
of been a brother, or son to William ::)  More research for me I think.

Vasaborg - Thanks. I will do that. I also intend to visit Waterford, in the next few months.
I believe Waterford library, have the 1901/1911 census records, for that area, on microfilm.

Corisande- Thanks, I was considering doing that, just wanted to be sure, I had the correct family.

Regards, Mike.

Have a look at the newspaper index in the Library, its covers the years 1884 to 1948, a lot of births, marriages and deaths are indexed, you might find some information on your family.

looked back in the directories and a James Somers, Basket maker is present at the same Michael St. address in 1870 and 1846...

James looks to be listed on Griffiths (1851) on Michael St and his landlord is Robert Newport. So presumably Robert, or his descendants , were Landlord for the O'Neills (The plot number for Griffiths seems to be slightly different to the Street number.)

There seems to be only a few Howell family's in Waterford and nearby - e.g. Griffith only has 3.

In 1870 there's a T.G. Howell, Leather seller, Ironmonger & Hardware in nearby Carrick-on-Suir

in 1881 he is also listed as a  Book seller

in 1894 he is listed under 'Private Residents' with an address of : Suir Valley lodge

p.s. one of the Howell entries on Griffiths is listed at Francis St, Waterford, which is about half a km from Michael St.

Thanks so much Shane for that info, plenty to keep me going.

As for the surname-Howell, I only have a reference to Anastasia. (trying to workout the origin of her forename)

I do have a strong possible index for her Marriage- Waterford district, 1885, which does cross check

with that for- William O'Neill.   Also, a death (but no birth) index, for Anastasia O'Neill, in the same

district, in 1934, aged 75.  So with that, I will order the marriage certificate, in the hope that I have

found my GGrandparents.

Once again, many thanks.   Mike.

PS  I do have another query about an address in the same area, but I'll ask in another topic.
