rosanna winfield-mason
« on: Tuesday 14 April 09 14:51 BST (UK) »
Hi. Can anyone help me to trace where a Rosanna Winfield was before Census 1881.
I have established that she claims to have been born in Ilkeston about 1860. Records from FreeBmd give me Sep.1859 7b104 Basford.
Also she married a William Mason in 1878. Before her marriage she had a son Samuel Winfield, probably his father was William.
Can't find her in 1871 or 1861
I would appreciate any help.
Henery  :)

Hi Pauline
Hi Tati
Many thanks to you both for your info about Rosanna.
You are correct about the 1861 Census she must have been listed as Rosamond. I have crosschecked some details about Rosanna's father's name and it is Thomas , mother was Anne.
You have helped me out of a stalemate in this research!!
Incidentally in her later life I find her listed as Rose Hannah Winfield.
The info supplied to the enumerators can be a little confusing!
Once again many thanks.

Henery :) :)

I realise it has been some time since this post was written. I came across it when researching Rosanna Winfield Mason.

The life of Rosanna Winfield - Mason  as researched by me. I am starting her story with the birth of Samual Winfield born in Awsworth, in the Parish of Basford, Nottinghamshire in 1877. I have surmised that she was unmarried when Samual was born and as such gave her son her Surname.

Rosanna Winfield married William Mason in the Parish of Basford, Nottinghamshire
October 1878.

The 1881 Census shows:

William Mason 28, Rosanna Mason 21, Samual Mason 3, William Mason 1

This states Samual Winfield is now called (Mason). They had 2 daughters, Beatrice and Hannah after the census was taken. William Mason died at the age of 30 from “Dropsy” his burial was on the 25 March 1883.

The 1891 Census shows:

Rosanna had remarried in !884 to William Wilkinson born in Wadworth, Yorkshire in 1859.

William  Wilkinson 31, Rose Hannah Wilkinson 31, Samuel Winfield 13,
William Mason 11, Beatrice Mason 9, Hannah Mason 8, George Wilkinson 6,
Arthur Wilkinson 4, Edith Wilkinson 2, Emma Wilkinson 1/12.

Please note: In the census the Surname was transcribed as Wilkenson and Samual had reverted back to the name Winfield.

The 1891 Census Shows:

William Wilkinson 41, Rosehannah Wilkinson 41, William Mason 21,
Beatrice Mason 19, George Wilkinson 16, Arthur Wilkinson 14,
Edith Wilkinson 12, Emma Wilkinson 10, John Wilkinson 5, Frank Wilkinson 4,
Harriett Wilkinson 4, Lily Wilkinson 2, Cyril Wilkinson1/12

William Wilkinson died in the Parish of Basford 1901.

Rose Hannah as she is now referred to gets married a 3rd time.
The record states that she is 53 years old and Widowed she married Alfred Collis
3 August 1912 in Heath, Derbyshire, England. The record states her name as Rose Hannah Wilkinson ( Rose Hannah Wingfield) and her Father as (Thomas Wingfield).

The end of the story is her death, the record states that Rose H Collis died aged 81
In  Chesterfield, Derbyshire in June 1941. This lady appeared to have had a very colourful life!
As for me, I now have to go back and find out just who this lady is wether it be: Rosanna Winfield (Wingfield) Rose Hannah Winfield, Rosomund Winfield. Here’s hoping I can solve the mystery ???

Hi Jean.
Re your post about Rosanna Winfield. I was the author of the  post dated 2009.
At the time I was researching Rosanna for my sister in law and collected a substantial amount of detail on her family tree starting with her father Thomas Winfield b1822 who wed Anne White in 1852 at Basford Derbyshire. My info shows she had at least 6 siblings.
The rest of your research is very similar to mine in particular  the Samuel Mason-Winfield episode.
Samuel wed Anne Towle in 1876 and had 9 children one of these Beatrice Annie Winfield b1907 wed a Harold R Keeling my sister in law's father hence my research.
If I can be of further help please let me know.
I was not aware of her third marriage to Alfred Collis but it looks as though it was the end of her child bearing days. I make it about 13 living children!
Regards

Thank you so much to everyone who has replied to my post.

Henery,

Samual Winfield and Annie Towle are the parents of my grandfather Albert George Winfield 1905 – 1968 (child 5 of 9). Thank you for letting me know about  Beatrice Annie Winfield b1907, I had her as Annie. I have Rosanna Winfield as being born in July 1859 in Basford, Nottinghamshire. is that correct? My research into her also resulted in 13 children. I suspect that William Mason was not the biological father of Samual Mason. My reasoning for this conclusion is that  William Mason, Beatrice Mason, Hannah Mason, were all baptised with the parents being William Mason and Rosanna Mason. I found no record of a baptisim for Samual Winfield/Mason. It would appear that your sister in law and I are related  :D I still need to update her profile with everything I have found. You are more than welcome to have a look at my tree it is set to public view.

Again thanks for your help.
