Clarks of Cavan
« on: Tuesday 14 April 09 17:13 BST (UK) »
Hello folks,

I'm on a long shot - aren't we all!!

I'm looking for Clarks in Cavan from Circa 1830-1840. Father we think is Patrick, mother is unknown. The son I know most about is James born 1839-1845 who emigrated to Willington Quay (Tyneside) sometime around 1860. We believe there may have been an older brother Tom.

James married Margaret Connor from Drumnaquoile Co Down on Tyneside in 1869.

James seemed to do well on Tyneside running his own business and buying property but died of 'apoplexy' (stroke) in 1887.

Any leads to connections in Cavan greatly appreciated.

Regards,

An update - still seeking news!

English census of 1871 and 1881 show James and Thomas to be from Cavan. Thomas is the older brother being 8-12 years older. We suspect they may have come to England mid 1860's, between the censuses. As far as we can establish they were RC.

James's profession is Farmer on his marriage cert., so I'm guessing he may show up in GV. I've found two Clarks for Cavan for the period, but not sure how to follow this up - advice much appreciated.

Cavan Genealogy have done some searches for me but haven't been able to find any matches.

The church records for Cavan are available on www.irish-roots.ie but there are far too many James & Thomas Clarkes to narrow it down without more specific information such as parish or exact year of birth.

Thanks for the tip.

DOB is proving difficult ! from marriage and death certs, census etc. we currently have a date range from 1837-1855, but more likely 1839-1845.

We now think there may be other siblings; Luke b 1831 d 1869 and possibly Catherine b 1834. Mother may be Mary b1797. All born Ireland {Kingscourt (Enniskeen) - best match}, all died England, probably Tyneside.

Latest update;

Father Patrick, Mother Mary (b1797), children Thomas (b1825), Luke (b1831 d 1869), Catherine (b1834), James (b1837 d 1892). Older children may have stayed in Ireland.

We have now located them in the 1861 English census in Old Staith Cottages, Willington Quay, Tyneside, Thomas and Luke were working at the Copper smelter. Mary was widowed.

Luke died of TB in Ravensworth Street Willington Quay (their next address) and James died of a stroke at 17 Fourth Street, Wallsend where he owned a grocers shop and off licence.

Thanks,

Irish Geordie.

I have been doing research on the Clark family for a few years. From what I have found my Great-Grand Father was Patrick Clarke from Kingscourt,Cavan,he Married Ann Gologly also from KIngscourt in 1871.
His father was Peter Clarke and his mother was Mary Murry. Her father was Owen Gologlyand her mother was Martha Beard.
My Grand Father was Patrick Clarke and he married Annie King in New York.
I think there were brothers James and Thomas and possibly sisters Mary and Bridget.
I hope this information is useful and if you find anything else I would like to hear from you so I can continue searching.

Aghadowey,

Thanks for the links. Although I've narrowed down the searching, even contacted Cavan Genealogy, I think the next step may have to be an 'in person' visit.
