My great great grandad was an omnibus coachman in London in 1880-he sat next to the driver.

He fell off the carriage one day ,cracked his head open and died- the local record office advised me that the inquest would have been reported in the paper. They then looked it up and posted the article to me.

Have mailed a friend with Whitechapel ancestors to see if he knows which record office may be able to help you........LMA perhaps?

ooh, how interesting!
Thank-you, I have just had a look at the Times archive- nothing there, and The East London Advertiser doesn't seem to have anything on line---shall persevere. I dint really expect to get anything though, as it wasn't an interesting death, and it doesn't seem that anything about Ernest's Australian difficulties ever reached the British press either! But there may be a short death notice somewhere.

Perhaps  he  left Australia after all  that happened to  him, to seek  refuge  back with his family, who may  never have known  what he  had been involved with in Australia.

He  died  only 8 months approx after he left one would assume  that  the cancer on  his cheek  would be  noticable and no doubt spreading to his other organs  and  then getting Broncho-pneumonia on top of it.

He could have allready  been a sick  man  in Australia, maybe  that is why  he appeared in  the story  to be  either involed or  just gulliable.

I  doubt  know about England  but  in Australia an inguest is usually  held if  the cause of  death  is  not apparent or  there are suspicious circumstances.

Would  there have been a death  notice in  the  papers at  the  time?

When my dad died in 1970- suddenly-and at only 46-they held an inquest.
The reason being that he wasn't under the care of his doctor- had not visited him within the preceeding two weeks.

My London pal reckons that the Tower Hamlets record office may be able to help more.Email  them to ask if they have the local newspaper of the time- or even access to the coroners inquests.

Great you rec'd the death certificate.

My gr gr grandfather had cancer of the face, basically it was like a big hole in his cheek that they used to pack with raw meat.

Since an inquest was held, hopefully you can obtain a copy of it.  I know I have a few from the early 1900's.

Thank-you, all!
I shall see whats available.- I got a reply from a nice man in the US about Ernest's grave-but unfortunately he did not know whether he was actually buried in Newfoundland or just commemorated  there. He also thinks Ernest was born there- so next purchase might have to be some birth certificates.....
