Just looking at imcoming UK immigration lists and see

Warren, Ernest E, Master Mariner,
age 51, last country of permanent residence Australia, intended permanent residence England, address C/- Commonwealth Bank of Australia, London.  Embarked at Sydney on the ship Jervis of the Australian Commonwealth Line, port of arrival London, 27 Sept 1924.

Age is close enough to the age you had on the marriage certificate and the anecdotal evidence about him being drugged is close too.  Oh how interesting to know if it's the same chap.

Is this the 1924 death you refer to ?

I don't know that UK death notices give huge amount of information re family?

Hi Judith,
First, I want to thank-you publically for your amazing help, and for sending scans of the three newspaper reports! You have been brilliant!!
Well- I am pretty sure the Jervis passenger list is the same Ernest as involved in the trial. As for the death, I have sent for the Whitechapel cert., on grounds of age being a better fit, and this was the registration district for where several of the wider family lived. UK death certs give very little info unfortunately. - name, cause of death, address where died, name and address of informant is usually all you get! At worse I shall find a death in hospital informant a doctor, which will be useless to identify him. But who knows, I may get a relative of mine and address to go on! I shall let you know.
From the news reports of trial I think its safe to assume that Ernest Warren in the Australian fraud case, and Ernest Warren son of Newfoundland resident James Warren are one and the same man. Not 100% happy with him being "my" Ernest yet, but--the coincidences are striking- same name, age, occupation, fathers name, and mention of a Julia in the letter, ---its looking good!

Hello All Again,

Just had death certificate for my man--I think it is him, but it raises a few questions, and would be grateful for any thoughts---

REG DIST WHITECHAPEL
6th May 1925   London Hospital   Ernest Edwin Warren   male   53 years
occupation; 92 West Parade, Anlaby Road, Hull,  Master Mariner
cause; carcinoma of cheek, Broncho-pneumonia
informant; certificate received from R L Guthrie, Coroner for Eastern District, London. Inquest held 8th May 1925


so--I wonder what he was doing in Hull, perhaps he had lost all his money and had to return to his work?? I am also puzzled as to why he would have died back in London?-----will probably never know!

When he returned to England from Australia, did he travel as a passenger or as a crew member?

Of course Hull is a port so it's not out of the ordinary to find a mariner ending up there.

Cancer of the cheek- unusual hey?

Now you need the inquest of course!

I found for one of my Londoners that the local paper gave the best account of it.Not sure which it would be for Whitechapel nor which reg office it might be,maybe others can help?

Is it possible to get inquest reports??
I am presuming cancer of the cheek was skin cancer related- not surprising for a mariner sailing from China/Japan/ Aus etc.
or maybe from keeping a wad of chewing tobacco permantly lodged there, hey hey me hearties.
I am not sure the local papers would have been interested enough to report this- but as he died in the London Hospital I suppose it may have warrented a death notice---will look into it, good idea,Thanks Carol.
