FTM 2008, and internet?-completed, thank-you
« on: Wednesday 15 April 09 17:45 BST (UK) »
Hi, hope someone can give me a bit of advise please-
I have just bought and installed Family Tree maker 2008. I cannot seem to register it- I get a try-again-later message, unable to connect to server. Nor can |I "search the internet" and connect to my Ancestry account- it just says I have no internet connection. I tried activating my "free" 3 months trial, and nothing at all happens. I went to Ancestry directly to email them a question- and got a pre-sending automatic answer- to check that I had an up to date version of FTM2008, and it seems I dont. But Ancestry solution is to down- load a patch-.If I try to do it automatically, it says I am unable to connect--and when I go on their link I get the same or a message saying my version is already up to date. It isnt- but I AM connected fine to the internet-- stuck. Any advise please??
Thank-you, Sally

Thank-you John, for this fantastic help----- all well now!

It sounds like the firewall is stopping the program connecting to the Internet.

Which one are you using?

Thanks for the reply-- I seem to have McAfee-  its a new laptop and I dint really understand the technical stuff.  Sorry for the delay in my reply- have been having trouble here too- unable to post when I first got onto Rootschat, and then unable to get on at all- even now its unbelievably slow- Am I at fault here or is there a problem??  I am, as you will gather completely hopeless.

Okay, it is no problem.

I have McAFee as well.

See if you can follow this...

Double click on the red 'M' icon at the bottom right of the screen next to the time

Click on 'Internet & Network' next to globe icon second one down

In the box that comes up click on 'configure'

Where it says 'Firewall protection is enabled' click on 'advanced'

On left hand side click on 'program permissions' second one down

------- Nearly there----- :D

You need to find Family Tree Maker in the list that is generated.

It should have 'Full Access' if not click on 'Allow access'

Let me know what you find...

Hi John
Have followed your instructions-- I found that I did not have full access, but but have changed it. However the situation remains-- FTM says not connected, cant register it for same reason, and it also wont let me install the patch from Ancestry. I have also tried uninstalling FTM and then reinstalling----  flummuxed, but thank-you so much for this help-- really appreciated!

Did you already have any version of FTM on your computer Sally ?

It sounds like there is something stopping the new installation.

Unfortunately Windows leaves lots of files around even if a program is removed.
