Hi Lisa

Ah well, she could be any of the Sarah Jane Browns as she could have lived anywhere before being admitted to hospital as the Austin took in patients from all over.  Do you have any idea of the occupation of her brother as it may give a clue as to his electoral roll registration.

Can you give the actual death date and I'll have a trawl through the Melbourne paper/s for a death notice next tiem I'm at the Nat Library (sometime next week).

Just checked Death Certificate again. It said she was originally from Ringwood. Sorry, been getting you to look in wrong area. Are you able to check ER for Ringwood.

Sorry Lisa,
Can't see any Sarah Jane Brown in the Eastern suburbs.  I fear she may just  have enrolled as plain Sarah - and there are lots of them - but at a quick look I couldn't see a Sarah Brown in Ringwood.  i am not sure that voting was compulsory for women at that time.

Hi Jenn,

Umm, I think that in NSW females were on "citizen lists" for municipal elections from earliest elections (1840's City of Sydney) and that citizen lists were based on property holdings.    But I also think females were not permitted to stand as candidates in local government elections until say 1917 legislation.  Not sure, but will sort through my references (hardcopy books about history of inner Sydney suburbs, among other things) and raise that as a separate topic, perhaps in a week or so.  Cheers Moi.
